Outreach & Mentoring
Andrés is deeply committed to mentoring and empowering students from all backgrounds.
As a Ph.D. student at Columbia University, Andrés received the department’s Jack Miller Award for his teaching in the general chemistry lecture and laboratory series, and later served as a teaching assistant for the graduate quantum chemistry course.
Throughout his career, Andrés has pursued his passion for teaching and helping others grow. He has mentored high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, immigrant statuses, races, religions, gender identities, and sexual orientations, guiding them as they explore research and helping them navigate the college, graduate school, and medical school application processes.
RFK Science Research Institute
Andrés has served as scientific advisor (2016 – present) and mentor (2011 – present) at the RFK Science Research Institute (RFKSRI), now the ESR Foundation. The program gives high school and undergraduate students from the New York City area, especially those from underrepresented groups, the chance to do research in geochemistry, archaeology, and paleoanthropology, building their critical thinking, logical reasoning, scientific writing, and presentation skills. Through this program, Andrés has mentored more than 20 students over the past decade.
